"Song of the Caged Bird" is a song by Lindsey Stirling. The first known recording of the track was recorded in 2010 for Stirling's first EP, Lindsey Stomp. The track was later re-released on her first studio album, Lindsey Stirling.
Composition[]
Stirling inspiration for the song was Maya Angelou's poem "I Know Why the Caged Bird sings". On the official booklet from Lindsey Stirling, Stirling explains what the poem is about and what it means to her:
"In this poem, a bird stares out of its cage enviously looking at the world outside, more than anything, it wants to be like the other birds. [...] After futile attempts to escape, it realizes that it will never be able to get out of its cage. It brings joy to everyone nearby, and in the process finds happiness itself.
Often times we can't control our circumstances. However it's up to us to determine how we will respond to them. We all have a voice to find and a gift to share. When we learn to sing, the world is a brighter place for everyone in our sphere of influence."
Live performances[]
Song of the Caged Bird was part of the setlist of the Lindsey Stirling Tour during 2013. It was also part of the setlist of The Music Box Tour during 2015.
